Manchester United advance to FA Cup fourth round with 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic

Manchester United booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium on Monday night. The Red Devils were dominant throughout the game and scored a goal in each half to seal the win.

The first goal came from Diogo Dalot, who curled a stunning shot from outside the box into the far corner in the 22nd minute. The Portuguese defender, who has struggled with injuries since joining United in 2018, showed his quality and confidence with a remarkable finish that left Wigan goalkeeper Sam Tickle helpless.

The second goal was scored by Bruno Fernandes from the penalty spot in the 74th minute. The midfielder, who has been United’s talisman since his arrival in January 2020, won the spot-kick himself after being fouled by Wigan defender James Carragher. Fernandes calmly sent Tickle the wrong way and doubled United’s lead.

Wigan, who are currently in the third tier of English football, put up a brave fight and had some chances of their own, but could not find a way past United’s goalkeeper Andre Onana. The Latics’ best opportunity came in the first half, when Thelo Aasgaard forced a save from Onana with a low shot from inside the box.

United, who are the joint-most successful team in FA Cup history with 12 titles, will face either Newport County or Eastleigh in the next round. The two lower-league sides drew 1-1 on Saturday and will play a replay on Tuesday 16 January. United manager Erik ten Hag will be hoping for another comfortable win as he aims to win his first trophy with the club.
