WhatsApp is set to introduce a new feature aimed at bolstering user privacy by allowing individuals to cease sharing their phone numbers with strangers. Initially available for Android users in the beta version, this functionality enables users to generate distinctive usernames to share instead of their phone numbers, fostering a more secure connection on the platform.

The noteworthy aspect of this development is that the feature is not restricted to mobile users; it will also be extended to users of the WhatsApp web client. Users can access this privacy-centric feature by navigating to their profile settings, where they will find an option to create a username located just below the name tab in the interface. This update positions WhatsApp as a platform where users can be located and contacted without the necessity of divulging personal phone numbers.

The conventional method of connecting via WhatsApp using only a phone number has raised security and exposure concerns for many users. The introduction of usernames provides a unique identifier reminiscent of the days of BBM for BlackBerry devices.

Creating a username is a straightforward process; users can simply add an '@' prefix before their desired name on the messaging app. What sets this feature apart is its flexibility — users can change their usernames as frequently as they wish, without any imposed limits. This ensures that users have the freedom to adapt and personalize their identifiers over time.

The benefits of usernames are currently accessible to Android users in the beta version 2.23.11.15, with a wider rollout expected for all users in the coming weeks.
