Intel's 14th-Gen Laptop CPUs Give Gaming a Boost
The company's new HX processors are more performance optimized, and midrange desktops get a lift, too.
Intel has recently announced its 14th-Gen Raptor Lake Refresh HX-series CPUs for laptops at CES 2024. These new processors are designed to deliver the ultimate gaming performance for mobile devices, with up to 24 cores, 5.8 GHz boost clock, and 192GB DDR5 support12. How do these new chips compare to the previous generation, and what are the benefits for gamers?
The 14th-Gen HX-series CPUs are based on the same Raptor Lake architecture as the 13th-Gen desktop CPUs, but with some improvements and optimizations. The most notable change is the increase in core count and frequency, which can boost the performance of CPU-intensive games and applications. For example, the flagship Core i9-14900 HX has 24 cores (6 performance cores and 18 efficient cores), compared to the 16 cores (8 performance cores and 8 efficient cores) of the Core i9-13900 HX13. The Core i9-14900 HX also has a higher boost clock of 5.8 GHz, thanks to Intel’s Thermal Velocity Boost technology, which dynamically adjusts the frequency based on the temperature and power headroom14.
Another improvement is the support for DDR5 memory, which can offer higher bandwidth and lower latency than DDR4. The 14th-Gen HX-series CPUs can support up to 192GB of DDR5-5600 memory, which can improve the performance of memory-bound games and applications15. Additionally, the new CPUs also support PCIe 5.0, which can enable faster data transfer between the CPU and the GPU, as well as other devices1 .
Intel claims that the 14th-Gen HX-series CPUs can offer up to 30% more gaming performance than the 13th-Gen HX-series CPUs, and up to 50% more performance than the AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX1 . Some of the games that can benefit from the new CPUs include Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and Battlefield 20421 . Intel also has a new app called Intel Application Optimization, which can further boost the frame rates of some PC games, such as Metro Exodus and Rainbow Six: Siege, by optimizing the thread scheduling and application threading4 .
The 14th-Gen HX-series CPUs are expected to be available in the first quarter of 2024, and will power some of the most powerful gaming laptops from various brands, such as ASUS, MSI, Alienware, Razer, and Lenovo1 . These new CPUs will offer gamers a new level of performance and experience on the go, and will challenge AMD’s dominance in the mobile gaming market.
